Strategic Website Usability

140-Character Usability Reviews

I'm really fascinated by the idea of saying more with less (something that might not be obvious given how much I talk), which is probably why I'm drawn to haikus, comic strips, and microblogging. I also generally feel that constraints force us to think a bit harder and sometimes find better solutions.

So, I'm going to try an experiment: I'm going to see if I can do usability reviews on Twitter, with each review being limited to a single 140-character message. Of course, I'm not going to pretend that this will take the place of a full review, and real usability work requires ongoing observation and testing, but I'm curious if I can provide real value in a very short space. Ultimately, I see a lot of client sites that, while they could certainly benefit from long-term work, have 1 or 2 glaring problems that they need to address first.

How to Get Reviewed

Just Tweet (that's Twitter-talk for "send") me a link @dr_pete along with the word "Review", and tell me one problem, concern, or goal that you have for the site. I'll check out the website and get back to you with 1-2 primary issues that I think you (or your client) need to address. Of course, here's the catch: if I have to constrain myself to one 140-character message, so do you. No cheating!

The Usual Disclaimers

I'll do my best to respond to people in a timely manner, but I check Twitter more often some days than others and checking out a site takes a little time, so don't take it personally if I don't get back to you right away. One site per person/account, please. I reserve the right to rescind this offer if the volume of requests gets too high, but I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it.
