Dilbert Does Usability
I try not to, but every once in a while I have to link out to something. Today's Dilbert comic has a little something to say about usability.Unfortunately, this is a view shared by too many IT professionals (including usability specialists): that their area of expertise is the only one of value and takes priority. You can't run a site without infrastructure, the infrastructure's useless without something to run on it, usability is pointless if no one comes to your site, and the infrastructure and marketing will be a waste of money if you can't sell anything due to lousy usability. One of these days, we network engineers, security specialists, designers, marketers, SEOs, and usability folks need to wake up and realize we all need each other.

· Friday, November 16Hilarious, Dr Pete. Given that it's Friday, you're "excused" for linking out to something humorous!
Your follow-up comment is well-taken -- we've gotta start getting along at some point. Sadly, time constraints and ignorance on both [/all] sides tend to get the better of all of us, I'd say...

I hope so. Being a Jack of all trades has been the blessing and curse of my entire career.

· Thursday, November 29You try not to link out? Are you intentionally trying to avoid getting attention for your awesome content? Why blog if you don't want people reading it?

· Thursday, November 29Gabriel, nice to see you here. Sorry, my statement wasn't very clear: I just meant that I try not to do posts that are just links out to other people's blogs, videos, etc. with me saying "hey, check this out". I've been trying to put more time into original content and link out to articles I really like in my "Blogroll 2.0" on the right column.

· Wednesday, December 5Right, I get it now. You meant, not link out without adding anything else to the post. I'm not a big fan of those either! Anyways, keep up the good work!

· Thursday, December 13Very funny!
I don't mind if they joke about usability, from my point of view, advertisement is also important.

· Friday, November 16One word would solve all of this - leadership. And sadly IT leadership is usually lacking (or non-existant) in organizations where this type of scenario thrives.
Long live the generalists!
