GIW debabbled
There's really no point to having my own blog if I can't be a little self-indulgent from time to time. So, at the risk of offending my 2-4 regular readers (thank you, Feedburner), I'm taking a tangent this week to explore an entirely fictional phenomenon of my own creation, GIW.What is GIW?
Let's face it: the internet is a complicated thing. Sometimes, things go wrong, and we have no idea why. All of these unexplained problems can be attributed to what I call GIW: General Internet Weirdness. General Internet Weirdness is that intangible force that causes websites to go down, performance to suffer, website traffic reports to seem wrong, boy bands to be popular, etc.
What's in it for me?
Necessity is the mother of invention, and I was forced to make up this term to cope with the simple reality of having to explain to clients just how complicated the internet can be. Now, I'm obviously all for being candid with clients and customers and taking out the technobabble wherever possible, but some things simply defy explanation. To be completely honest, and no client ever wants to hear this, it's shocking that the internet works at all. Just remember, when in doubt, blame it on GIW.
