Strategic Web Usability

Usability in a Search-driven World

Thanks again to everyone who attended my webinar last week. The full presentation, with audio, is available on the Corvent website. I'm also posting the slides here (you'll need Flash to view them):

I hope people enjoyed the event, and thanks to Corvent and SEMpdx for their support. If you have questions about the presentation, feel free to contact me.

Great job Pete. Your slides do a good job of communicating your point even without audio. I would love to see more information on de-duping.

Thanks, Carlos. Every time I do a post about duplicate content, I seem to get into a fight with someone. It's easier if I just talk about it so fast that no one can argue with me :)

I need to apply the talk real fast method to more things in my life.

Awesome slide deck, Dr. Pete! Wish I had had time to see it live.

Nice slideshow. I prefer to store the incoming keywords in a Db rather than use GA. Then I can add other metrics in to help me make decisions, i.e. how competitive i think the term is, what the CPC is on Google etc.

What has creating unique product IDs got to do with encouraging deep linking though?

Even in the full webinar, I didn't explain that unique product ID idea very well. Basically, it came out of a client case study. We wanted to give people a quick reference to the events in their database, so we create what was essentially a product code for each one. We made sure to give it a consistent and unique format to make it recognizable, just like you might see a number start with "1Z..." and know it's a UPS tracking number.

Originally, this was to make it easier for people to reference an event on a return visit or the phone. Interestingly, though, Google indexed these unique IDs, and when people forgot how to get to the client's site and started searching for them, they essentially became direct, deep links. This prevented potential customers who forgot the URL, etc. from ending up on a competitor's site.
